How will the course help you?

Inspire your primary learners by learning how to make high-quality resources out of creative and sustainable teaching materials. Develop your learners’ language and oral skills through effective use of resources such as flashcards, big books, and puppets.


What does the course include?

Creative resources for primary is a free self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: Understanding flashcards for primary

The aim of this module is to demonstrate how flashcards can be made from recyclable materials. You'll have the chance to practise simple drawing techniques, and also have the opportunity to create flashcards and plan how to use them in your classes.

By the end of this module, you'll be able to:

-recognise the value of flashcards as a resource
-prepare quality flashcards from recyclable materials
-produce simple drawings
-use flashcards effectively to review and practise language.

Module 2: Understanding picture books for primary

The aim of this module is to demonstrate the value of using picture books as a lower primary classroom resource and how they can be made from recycled materials. The module also looks at making zigzag books with learners and demonstrates how these can be used to develop language skills. Finally, throughout the module, you'll look at a variety of storytelling techniques you can use in the classroom.

By the end of this module you'll be able to:

-explain the value of big books as a resource
-identify a variety of storytelling techniques to introduce and practise language
-incorporate more storytelling techniques into your lessons
-make and use a 'big book' for your learners
-show your learners how to make a zigzag book
-use more storytelling techniques to practise language.

Module 3: Understanding puppets and masks for primary

The aim of this module is to show how recyclable household and natural items can be used for making classroom resources such as puppets and masks. The advantages of using these resources are discussed, as well as activities to use with them which develop learners' oral skills.

By the end of the module, you'll be able to:

-describe the benefits of using puppets and masks in the primary classroom
-make masks and puppets using recyclable household materials
-show your learners how to make puppets and masks
-use puppets and masks to develop learners' oral skills

To enrol in the course you need to follow the 2-step instructions on the page above, where it says "How do I sign up for the course?". Once you've created your TeachingEnglish account and have logged in, you can go straight to step 2 and click the enrol button.

As you work through each module you will see that the course is "in progress". When you have completed all modules you will see "completed". Then you will be able to access and download your course certificate from the "My awards" page.

Hi Yenifer,

Welcome! I can see that you are already enrolled in a course - if you are on a mobile, you can find the MY PORTFOLIO tab under "Menu" on the left hand side of the screen. If you are on a computer, you can find it at the top left of the page.

Click on it, then on "My courses" and you will be taken to the courses platform.

I've just checked your account and I can see the MY PORTFOLIO tab when you are logged in. You just need to click on that, then "My courses" and then click the "Explore all courses" tab. There you will see all of our currently available courses.

In case I can't watch the course the time that it is scheduled , is there a way I can watch afterwards?

Thanks for your comment. All of our courses are self-access which means you can complete the modules at your own pace, as long as you finish before the course closes.

To enrol in the course you need to follow the two step process above under "how do I register?". Once you are enrolled, you can access the course by clicking on the MY PORTFOLIO - My courses tab which will appear at the top of the page when you are logged in.

Sorry you have been having problems, we are experiencing ongoing technical issues which we are working hard to resolve. I can confirm that I have restored your access to the courses platform so you should be able to access your training now through the MY PORTFOLIO - My courses tab. Thank you for your comment. We are experiencing some technical issues at the moment. However, I can confirm that I have re-added your access to your training courses. You should now be able to see the "My Portfolio" tab and be able to log into the courses platform to register for this course.

Thanks for your comment - to register for the course, first make sure you are logged in to your TeachingEnglish account. Then click on this link: https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/ExploreProgrammes

This will take you to the courses platform, where you can see all of our available courses. Just choose the courses you would l like to join and then click on the "enrol in activity" button.
