Welcome to TeachingEnglish: How to teach pronunciation

How will the course help you?

Increase your understanding of phonology and your ability to support learners with effective pronunciation activities in the classroom.

What does the course include?

How to teach pronunciation is a free self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: Understanding pronunciation

The aim of this module is to explore the sound system of English and the way sounds function within it. The module also looks at how to describe the key aspects of pronunciation and relate these to the teaching of pronunciation.

By the end of the first unit of this module, you will be able to:

-explain the key concepts used in describing the different elements of pronunciation
-recognise sounds and phonemes, with the help of the British Council's phonemic chart

Module 2: Engaging with pronunciation – individual sounds

The aim of this module is to help you to prevent and correct your students' individual sound problems that are relevant to your own context. You will experience and evaluate a range of activities designed to practise problematic sounds.

By the end of this module, you'll be able to:

-identify the individual sounds of English that are most difficult for your learners to pronounce
-use a range of activities to give your learners practise in pronouncing problematic individual sounds
-use effective techniques to prevent poor pronunciation of individual sounds from developing
-use effective techniques to correct mispronunciation of individual sounds.

Module 3: Engaging with pronunciation – techniques and activities

The aim of this module is for you to understand how to integrate pronunciation practice in the classroom. The module looks at various aspects of pronunciation including stress, intonation and features of connected speech. You'll experience and evaluate activities, and plan how to integrate pronunciation activities with other aspects of language learning.

By the end of this module, you'll be able to:

- identify features of connected speech
- describe techniques to raise learners’ awareness of aspects of pronunciation
- integrate pronunciation activities with other aspects of language learning.

Hi Fiona,

Once you have created and logged into your TeachingEnglish account, you need to click on https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/ExploreProgrammes, then you should see all courses you're enrolled in.

The next time you log in, you should be able to see the "MY PORTFOLIO - My courses" tab at the top of the page. Mine is in between Home and Professional development. If you can't see it, check that you are logged in to your TeachingEnglish account.

Hi Manal,

You are successfully enrolled in the course- you need to log into your TeachingEnglish account and then click on the "MY PORTFOLIO - My courses" tab. If the tab doesn't take you to the courses platform,  you need to log out of your account on all devices, clear the cache on your browser and then log in again.

Hi,
I cannot register for this course. When I go to the Explore Courses page (after logging in), this course is not listed. I have the same problem also with the Safeguarding... course.
Did I miss something? Will registration open at a later time?

To register for the course you need to follow the instructions above under "how do I register for the course?" Firstly you need to set up a TeachingEnglish account and log in. Then click on step 2 and then the "enrol on this course" button. I've just checked and it is working fine for me. If you are still having problems can you let me know exactly what they are?
