Reading and writing in a second language is a challenging task for any learner.

How do teachers rise to the challenge of motivating students to develop these skills and keep them engaged? In this video, you’ll see some efficient and stimulating techniques to keep learners interested, energised and on task.

Part 1 focuses on a range of techniques and approaches which have proved successful in sustaining motivation, whilst ensuring learning takes place.

Part 2 focuses in particular on learner responses to two examples of motivating activities.

Part 3 follows one teacher’s response to a challenging classroom situation, with successful results.

Procedure:

  • Download the session notes below. The notes contain discussion, video-viewing and reflection tasks.
  • Follow the tasks by going through the video in sequence.
  • The video and session notes are designed as self-study resources to be worked through together. Techniques are transferable to other classes in other contexts.

Hi, Sorry to hear you are having problems. I've just checked the videos and they are working fine. Can you try using a different web browser (Chrome, Firefox for example)? Then try clicking on the boxes again. Hope that helps, Cath TE Team

Hi Umaru, There are a lot of resources for teaching students with different special needs on the site. Here are a few that you might find interesting. http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/identifying-working-dyslexic-students - a seminar which deals with myths related to dyslexic students, and strategies and techniques to use in the classroom. http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/speech-language-impairment - an article with more teaching ideas. http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/blogs/%C3%B6zge-karao%C4%9Flu/digital-storytelling - this is a link to a blog with various digital storytelling resources and how to use them in the classroom, including voice recording tools which might be interesting to use with dyslexic students. I hope these links help, Cath
