Welcome to Safeguarding learners online

How will the course help you?

Make your classroom a safe space for online learning. Help your learners to feel confident, be successful and recognise when they may need help.

What does the course include?

Safeguarding learners online is a free self-study training course, which is divided into three-hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: Understanding safeguarding

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the topic of safeguarding. You'll gain an overall understanding of the topic, consider some issues which can arise for the teacher and the learners, and gain some practical tips for best practice in the classroom.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

- identify some typical symptoms and signs of child abuse
- understand the basic categories of digital risks and how and who to report it to
- distinguish between preventative and responsive actions in safeguarding
- see your responsibilities in the context of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child
- create relevant posters and codes of conduct for your context.
- select appropriate child protection and digital safeguarding topics to bring into your classroom.

Module 2: Digital citizen identity

The aim of this module is to help you as a language teacher recognise the ways that we construct our identities online in a positive way and how we can find balance between our online and offline lives. You will define key terms and ideas, explore positive identities and reflect on the impact of your online self.

By the end of this module, you’ll be able to:

-define the basic vocabulary needed to talk about online activities with learners
-identify key aspects of digital citizenship.
-explain the pressures that young people feel when shaping their online image
-select lesson activities to explore how to shape online identities
-describe how digital media can make you feel
-plan activities to help learners find a media balance.

Module 3: Digital privacy and security

The aim of this module is to help you as a language teacher recognise the risks that are a part of your own and your learners' online lives and how you can protect yourself, including your identity and data. You will learn how to identify risks, leverage cybersecurity tools and mitigate against potential threats.

By the end of this module, you’ll be able to:

-identify different types of threats and child protection issues online
-define types of information that you should not share online
-discuss preventative and responsive actions for dealing with safeguarding issues
-identify cybersecurity strategies to avoid threats online
-discuss cybersecurity strategies with learners
-demonstrate an awareness of online behaviours that can affect online security
-understand what to do when online security is affected
