Abbas Rashid and Tony Capstick draw on their research to discuss instances of translanguaging in the classroom and suggests practical ways for teacher educators to help teachers make good pedagogical choices and generate learning benefit from the linguistic competences and diversity present in many (language learning) classrooms throughout the world.

About the speakers

Abbas Rashid is the executive director of the Society for the Advancement of Education (SAHE), an institution that has been active in the field of education research, policy analysis, and advocacy for around four decades. He has served on the board of the Punjab Examination Commission (PEC). Abbas has a particular interest in the areas of language and learning and education for citizenship. He was the lead editor of  ‘Educational Crisis and Reform: Perspective from South Asia' published by Oxford University Press in 2015. At SAHE, he has led research on the issue of language and learning for many years now. One of SAHE’s earlier reports focusing on this area was Policy and Practice: Teaching and Learning in English in Punjab Schools, 2013

Dr. Tony Capstick is Associate Professor of Language and Migration at the University of Reading in the UK. As an applied linguist, he is interested in the relationship between multilingualism and classroom learning and teaching. He has been working with in-service and pre-service language teachers through research, materials design, and professional development initiatives for over twenty years. His textbook, Language and Migration, was published by Routledge in 2020.
