Welcome to 'English in the multilingual classroom'


How will the course help you?

This course will introduce you to multilingualism and what it means. Learn how to make your classroom and teaching multilingual so that your learners can learn to celebrate and use many languages in the real world.


What does the course include?

English in the multilingual classroom is a self-study training course, which is divided into three hour modules. It also includes:

  • A dedicated Facebook community of course participants with up-to-date insight, resources and innovative ideas for you to try out.
  • Engaging discussions taking place in the Facebook community
  • Live events with your course tutor and language teaching experts.
  • A free workbook with extra learning content and resources.

What will you learn?

Module 1: The benefits of multilingualism

This module will introduce you to what multilingualism is and explore what it means to you as a teacher in a multilingual class. 

Module 2: Multilingualism in practice

This module will help you develop an understanding of multilingualism in elementary education and the benefits of developing and promoting it.

Module 3: Developing multilingual learners

In this module, you will learn to integrate multilingualism within your classroom tasks and activities and plan your English lessons with a focus on integrating multilingualism.

You will receive a certificate if you successfully complete all self-study modules.

If you've had difficulties accessing our TeachingEnglish open online course, please try the following: 

1. Log out, then close any windows where 'https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/' is open. 

2. Clear your browser’s cache or use 'private mode’ before going to https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/  

3. Log in.

4. Go to: https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/ExploreProgrammes find the course and select 'Enrol in activity' (if you don’t see the course here, don’t worry, just skip ahead to step 5). 

5. Go to https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/MyProgrammes, find your course and select 'Start course' 

6. Select the module you want to work on, go down the page and select 'Start task', then 'Start'.

Login out and restarting the session, immediately solves the issue. The "error" happens when sessions are left open, the browser keeps old data. Thank you!

I started this course on Friday, I've finished Module 1 and 2, I've also done half of module 3 but now i don't have access to course anymore cause its a not on my portfolio or my courses.

1. Please log out of your TeachingEnglish account and then log back in again.
2. If you have enrolled in the course, you will see 'MY PORTFOLIO' in the menu bar at the top of the page next to the Home button.
3. Move your mouse over MY PORTFOLIO to see the drop-down menu.
4. Click on ‘My courses’ to access your training.
5. From the training platform, go to 'My learning' and then 'My courses'. Your course should appear there.

Though enrolled into the course "english in the multilingual classroom", I am now unable to locate the my course options. It seems like I have been disenrolled from the course. I had already completed an entire section of the course. Requesting assistance at the earliest

I started the course but couldn't access it anymore. I have completed Module 1 and stated the second, but now its not available anymore on my Portfolio or My courses.

Please see the advice given to other commenters:

1. Try logging out of your TeachingEnglish account, and logging back in again to access "My courses" below 'MY PORTFOLIO' in the top menu bar. This will take you to the training platform

2. From the training platform here: https://open.teachingenglish.org.uk/Home/Dashboard go to ‘My Learning’ > ‘My Courses’

From there you should be able to see the course you have enrolled on.

Yesterday I could see and access the course from the "my portfolio" page (I began it actually!), but now it sends me back to the profile page and it is not possible to open the course (if you need it, I can screenshot what I see and send it to you).

I've just checked your account and you are successfully enrolled in the course. The "My portfolio" button is a tab at the top left of the page. If you click on it, you will see a drop-down tab "My courses" which should take you to the course platform. However, some users are reporting errors with accessing the course once they get to the course platform.

We are currently investigating this issue and why the course might have disappeared from some people's "My courses" tab. If this is the case for you too, can you try the following:

1. Use the "Help" button on the course platform to report this issue

2. Try logging out of your TeachingEnglish account, and logging back in again to access "My courses"?

The course start date seems to be before the course enrollment deadline.

Are the dates in reverse order? Did the course start yesterday, Feb 14th?

The course started on 14th February. It lasts four weeks, and the last possible date for enrollment is 6th March. The course content will be available until 14th March.
