This lesson plan for teachers of teenagers and adults at pre-Intermediate and above explores the theme of the Northern Ireland. Students will build their knowledge of Northern Ireland and practice their reading skills.

This lesson gives students the opportunity to find out more about Northern Ireland. It is one of a collection of four Destination UK lesson plans that look at the countries that make up the UK. Students will have the chance to read about Northern Ireland and find out a little about its people and culture.

Thanks for your comment, the Northern Ireland plan isn't going to be updated as the resources to redevelop it are not currently available. However we are currently producing new material related to the Good Friday Agreement in collaboration with The National Archives. These resources should be available in late June/early July 2023.

N.Ireland lesson

Could the creator of the Northern Ireland lesson please amend it? I have used it a few times and my students have queried the bracketed comment about protestants conveniently changing 'allegiance' when it comes to rugby. Teaching N.Ireland is complicated enough without authors showing clear bias. There is always an undertone of opinion in reporting the subject but clear (incorrect and misleading) prejudice has no place in teaching EFL. To justify the misleading information protestants generally do support an all Ireland rugby team, but in the same way that Welsh and Scottish people would support a British Team GB at the olympics. This has nothing to do with shifting allegiance and is more an extension of cultural and national identity. Ulster rugby players play in the Ireland rugby team and are rightly cheered on by Ulster fans when they do. I enjoy using the resources as they are intended to be used and I don't want to start editing them. The bracketed comment just jumps out as totally unnecessary and insulting. I hope it can be removed.
