Unit 2 looks at rapport – the relationship between teachers and their students.

In the video you will see teachers in their classrooms and the trainer, John Kay, talking about the importance of having a good relationship with your students and things you can do to help such a relationship develop. This unit contains the following:

  • a short video
  • A downloadable series of reflection tasks and activities.
  • An answer key and further opportunities for reflection.
  • If you are a teacher trainer and are planning to use the material in a face-to-face context, there is a set of trainer notes for each topic.

The material asks teachers to think of ways to encourage empathy, authenticity and respect. It also looks at different learning styles – the different ways that learners learn. In particular, the materials look at visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning styles and how these different styles might affect the way teachers teach.

The videos in this series express the view that “English language teaching has the same challenges the world over”, but that the solutions to these problems depend very much on the local context, and for this reason the approach taken focuses on tasks that enable the participants to relate the video to their own specific practice and experience.

building rapport with choldren is really important to get to know them well and know their strength and weeknesses and areas to work on. it buils a confidence and students are more encourged to share ideas openly . educators can give them chance to express themselves in oder to build fluency

Every year, some graduates who want to be a teacher come for their teaching practices. I often notice that most of them only look at their textbooks and other materials; they don't look at their students' faces. This is often true of us, teachers with some or much experience. Good relationships between teachers and their students start with looking at each other, face to face. Observing those student-teachers' classes reminds me of how difficult and important making a good eye-contact is.

This is highly impressive if a teacher can connect with the learners via empathy, praise, and encouragement.

It's also important to be helpful and make your students be helpful to each other. When Student A doesn't know the word he needs, help him. Or encourage other students to help their classmate - interaction is always welcomed!

Building rapport with the students is very important as they should feel confident to speak to someone other than their friends. They feel free to speak up and express their ideas
