Get to know the neighbours

Use this lesson in online or face-to-face delivery with lintermediate adults and teenagers to develop fluency skills and review adjectives of personality.

Introduction

Students are led through a series of activities to create profiles for imaginary characters who live in the same neighbourhood. The lesson then brings these characters together at a neighbourhood party, where students can practice asking and answering simple questions about work, family, hobbies and so on.

As well as developing spoken fluency, there are opportunities to expand vocabulary (personality adjectives) and some useful questions for making small talk. There is an optional stage on question intonation. There is a F2F and online plan available. The presentation can be used for both; making it a print free lesson.

Learning outcomes:

  • Develop a set of adjectives to describe personality
  • Identify kind of questions are socially acceptable
  • Practise using a set of useful ‘small talk’ questions
  • Practise being creative and imaginative
  • Build spoken fluency

Age/level:

Adults and teenagers  (CEFR B1)

Time:

110 minutes + extension activities. This plan could be done over more than one lesson.

1. I thought this plan would be work well in a community both in the reality or online. But, it needs a brave organiser and needs some residents who can have spare time of their own. 2. Nowadays, life rhythm is so busy that everyone is almost sealed in their own can. I thought neighbourhood online or on smart phone would be a good solution. You knew, depending on different conditions and some reasons, someone you would only meet in your past and could not directly see again. In this case, you can develop or keep a neighbourhood on your phone - sharing your experiences of cooking or celebrating holidays. 3. You can also keep on learning from each other through emails, for certain purpose, and for both your own heart's peacefulness. I thought those above are some new pathways up to date. We can try to bring some good elements into our own organisations. Adults, somehow, should learn from our children, and direct expressions would get away some heart barriers and shoot out willing for communications.
