Depending on where you are working, talk to some friends or other teachers about the general attitudes towards gambling before bringing the topic into the classroom. Adapt the activities as much as you feel necessary to your local cultural context. Firstly, students are introduced to the popularity of betting in the UK. Then they will play a game to bingo, to review numbers or a lexical set. The next task is a magazine style quiz for students to find out how much of a risk taker they are. They will then read a text which gives different opinions about playing the National Lottery, which can be used as a springboard for a wider discussion about lotteries and charitable donations and a role play. There is an optional grammar betting game called ‘jackpot’, which can be used to review vocabulary or grammar recently studied. Finally students take part in a discussion about what they would do if they hit the jackpot.
