The United Nations proclaimed 3 March as ‘UN World Wildlife Day’ to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.

Introduction

In this integrated skills lesson, pupils will learn about the illegal pet trade in Brazil. Pupils begin by guessing the answers to some questions about animal trafficking. Next, they read and find the answers in three short articles, written by: (a) a police officer, (b) an animal trafficker, (c) a vet from an animal rescue centre. Finally, learners work in groups and hold a discussion about crimes and punishments, using the vocabulary and ideas from the texts as well as their own ideas.

Aims:

  • To raise students’ awareness of the illegal pet trade (for Wildlife Day, if possible)
  • To develop reading and speaking skills
  • To expand vocabulary related to the environment
  • To encourage pupils to give reasons for their opinions
