The conference, which took as its theme ‘Linguistic Challenges to National Development & International Cooperation’, was co-hosted in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in October 2003 by the Ministry of Higher & Specialised Secondary Education, Republic of Uzbekistan, and by the British Council Uzbekistan.
In total 97 papers were presented during the conference; 43 of these were later written up and submitted for possible inclusion in this volume. From this number, just fourteen have been selected to provide a representative cross-section of the issues which were explored during the conference and have been organised around three key strands:
- Language planning and the language situation in Central Asia
- Literacy and bilingual education
- Language teaching development projects
