How can we get our students to really engage with reading texts in order to develop their reading skills?

In these videos, you will see activities and approaches that support learners throughout the process of interacting with a reading text; not only before they read, but during and after reading too. Watch how these teachers structure their reading lessons to ensure that their students engage meaningfully with the text, and how learners are supported during all stages of the reading process.

Parts 1 and 2 show activities related to specific stages in a reading lesson.

Part 3 shows how all stages are combined together in one single lesson.

Procedure:

  • Download the session notes. The notes contain discussion, video-viewing and reflection tasks.
  • Follow the tasks by going through the video in sequence.
  • The video and session notes are designed as self-study resources to be worked through together. Techniques are transferable to other classes in other contexts.

Video titles:

Part 1: Pre-reading tasks

Part 2: Activities during and after reading

I found ti interesting. Nice to hear the teacher in video 2 telling the students to @shhh"...this would be very insulting in Saudi Arabia where I work. Shhh would be taken as an insult, like herding sheep :-)
