Wh- questions can be compared with ‘yes/no' questions, which ask for confirmation.

In the classroom
Question structure is complex in English. It might be useful to start by focusing on subject questions, such as ‘Who discovered penicillin?' before structures such as ‘When was it discovered?' This allows learners to practise wh- questions in authentic communication.
