Our understanding of a script in a situation allows us to predict what happens and therefore can help a learner interpret language.
Example
Learners are going to watch a comedy sketch about restaurants, they explore the typical sequence of what happens in a restaurant before they watch, which prepares them for what happens in the comedy sketch, which may or may not follow this typical routine.
In the classroom
Teachers can encourage learners to suggest the typical sequence of events in different situations when the class is focusing on the functional language associated with situations.
