March 2023 webinars with TeachingEnglish Africa

Find out about two upcoming webinars happening in March 2023 hosted by TeachingEnglish Africa.

This March, TeachingEnglish Africa will be hosting two webinars. The first, on Saturday 04 March, looks at gender representation in teaching materials. The second, on Saturday 18 March, explores gender in the African classroom.

Gender Representation in Teaching Materials

The English Connects 'Creating Gender Pedagogy Resources for Teachers' project started in November 2022 to support and mentor English teachers in Sub-Saharan to learn to recognise the different kinds of gender bias and stereotypes which exist in language education. A cohort of teachers from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Sudan worked collaboratively to create gender-sensitive materials for other teachers to use. They also created a set of 20 activities to practise speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary and pronunciation which are gender-sensitive and support girls learning.

This webinar will be delivered by five participants from this project who will showcase the work carried out by the group and explain the focus of their project.

English Connects Action Research: Exploring gender in the African classroom

The English Connects Action Research project started in 2021 to support and mentor English teachers in Sub-Saharan Africa to carry out their own action research projects. In 2022, a third cohort of teachers from Ethiopia, Nigeria,  Senegal, South Africa and Sudan reflected and proposed solutions for their classroom issues through exploratory action research.

This webinar will provide a description of the project and most importantly, showcase the projects carried out. These research projects focused on Exploratory Action Research in Gender Education and will summarise the participants' discoveries on this issue and the tools they used to explore it in their classroom. Participants will explain the focus of their study, their methods for data collection and key findings. They will also share the action plan implemented and the impact this had in their classrooms.
