The study investigated to what extent pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes prepare students to meet the oral skills demands in their disciplines in EMI contexts. A total of four EMI higher education institutions were involved, Anglophone (UK) and non-Anglophone (Turkey and United Arab Emirates). The research used questionnaires and interviews with students, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) tutors and disciplinary tutors in all four institutions to better understand how students are prepared for their disciplinary studies and how EAP and disciplinary tutors support language in their own teaching contexts.
The good practice guide, derived from the study, provides practical insights and materials which are relevant to anyone who teaches diverse student groups in tertiary education.
