A lament can be a sad, military tune played on a bugle. The poem uses the title as the start of a list of lamented people, events, creatures and other things hurt in the war. All the details in the poem came from reports in the media.
To help you explore the poem with your students within your classroom, we've put together some resources, including a student worksheet and teacher's notes.
Within these resources, you can learn more about the poem and how to encourage your learners to discuss it. Contained within the worksheet are two pre-listening activities, an activity to complete while listening to the poem and some questions to answer after they have listened to the poem.
The purpose of the pre-listening activities is to encourage learners to do some creative thinking before they engage with the poem, either by listening or by reading. Once they have had the opportunity to explore the theme of the text and have contributed some of their own ideas, they are then ready to listen to the poem.
You can download the student worksheet and teacher's notes below. You can also listen to the audio and read the transcript.
