For children in refugee camps around the world, where teaching materials, language exposure, and opportunities for communicative language use are severely limited, simple videoconferencing tools can facilitate a positive and motivating language learning experience. Reflecting on the work of The Hands Up Project, a voluntary project Nick set up in January 2015, working online with children and teachers in refugee camps in Gaza and Jordan, he explores a range of activities that can help learners with both the bits and pieces of language (zooming in) as well as the wider picture (zooming out).
About the speaker
Nick Bilbrough has been involved in the field of language teaching for twenty-five years and is a regular presenter at conferences worldwide. He has taught and trained teachers in many diverse contexts in Africa, the Middle East, South America and Europe. He is particularly interested in classroom interaction, and in materials light approaches to teaching such as storytelling, drama and dogme ELT. He is the author of two resource books in the Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers series; Dialogue Activities (2007) and Memory Activities for Language Learning (2011) and more recently Stories Alive (2016) published by the British Council. He is now devoting all his energy to https://handsupproject.org/, telling stories and teaching language online for young learners in refugee camps.
