What is this webinar about?

Wei Liao, associate professor at the Center for Teacher Education Research at the Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University, and co-authors Xiaoyan Li (Beijing Normal University), Qiujin Dong (Xinjiang Normal University), Zhaoxuan Wang (University of Macau) share insight from their seminal systematic review of non-university-based teacher educators' professional learning. They discuss what we know globally about career structures and learning pathways for teacher educators, the aims and content of professional development provision for teacher educators and how practically teacher educators working in school-based settings in their various training, facilitating and mentoring roles can best be supported.

About the speakers

Wei Liao is an Associate Professor at the Center for Teacher Education Research, Beijing Normal University. He holds a dual Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Educational Policy from Michigan State University, USA. With extensive experience in supporting the professional learning and growth of teacher educators across diverse contexts, his research focuses on teacher educators, expert teachers, and self-study methodology. His work has been published in leading academic journals, including Teaching and Teacher Education, Professional Development in Education, and the International Journal of Qualitative Methods. Currently, he is editing a special issue for Teachers and Teaching on the theme: 'Teacher Educators and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI): Current Status and Future Directions.'

Xiaoyan Li is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Teacher Education Research, Beijing Normal University. Her research interests include teacher education, educational leadership, and school improvement. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia. Her work has been published in leading academic journals such as Teaching and Teacher Education, Asia-Pacific Journal of Teacher Education, and Research Papers in Education. With extensive experience in in-service teacher education, she has designed, implemented, and conducted follow-up research for more than ten professional development programs. Currently, she is leading a project funded by the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, focusing on leveraging digital intelligence technologies to support teacher learning.

Qiujin Dong is an Associate Professor at the College of Continuing Education, Xinjiang Normal University. She has led the design, implementation, and evaluation of various professional development programs for teachers, teacher educators, and school administrators in underdeveloped regions of Western China. Her research focuses on teachers’ moral learning and the professional development of non-university-based teacher educators. As a bilingual scholar, her work has been published in both English and Chinese academic journals, including Teaching and Teacher Education, 教师教育研究 (Teacher Education Journal), and 上海教师 (Shanghai Teachers).

Zhaoxuan Wang is a Ph.D. candidate at the Faculty of Education, University of Macau. Her research focuses on the professional development of teachers and teacher educators, with her doctoral study examining how non-university-based teacher educators engage with and learn big ideas in and for their professional practices. Since 2018, she has actively contributed to more than five teacher development programs, serving as an assistant, researcher, and instructor. Her research has been published in a series of top-tier academic journals, including Teachers and Teaching, Research Papers in Education, and Journal of Education for Teaching.

Our webinars are free.

They take place in Zoom Events. You do not need any special equipment to watch the webinars apart from a computer with the audio on. Registration is for the full event - you do not need to attend every session.

Instructions for joining a session in the event

  1. Click on the link that was emailed to you when you registered for the event.
  2. Enter the email address that you used to register for the event.
  3. If requested, introduce the passcode that was emailed to you when you registered for the event.
  4. You will join the 'lobby'. From the lobby you can chat to other participants. 
  5. From the lobby you will see the session that is either currently live or soon to be live. When a session is live, you can click 'join' to watch the live session.
Webinar recordings

All TeachingEnglish webinars are recorded and available to watch on demand between 24 and 48 hours after the live webinar has ended. Certificates

Certificates of attendance are available for all attendees. The link to obtain your certificate is provided in the following places:

  • At the end of the webinar in the chat box
  • In the 'Thank you for attending email' that you will receive after the webinar.
  • At the end of the feedback survey once you have answered the questions.

Where possible, we will make a PDF copy of the presentation available for you to download. However, for copyright reasons, this may not always be allowed. Please visit the same webinar page on TeachingEnglish after the event, where the PDF will be published, if permitted.
