Call for speakers 2024-5

Do you have English language teaching expertise to share? This is a unique opportunity to collaborate with the British Council and showcase your expertise on a global platform that reaches six million English teachers a year. 

We are looking for experienced teachers, teacher educators and other English language teaching professionals who would like to participate as speakers in our live online webinars, podcast series and social media in 2024-25. Our aim is to share ideas and knowhow across different countries and regions, and help people stay up to date with the latest research and innovations in English teaching.

We strongly recommend that you read all the information here and in the form carefully before planning and submitting your proposal.

Webinar proposal guidelines

We welcome submissions from anyone wishing to share their expertise with a regional and/or international teacher audience and the wider ELT community. You can apply as an individual presenter or as a collaboration of two (or more) people. 

Each webinar session is usually one hour in total, including 40-45 minutes for the speaker presentation and 10-15 minutes for audience questions. Our online events use a 1,000-capacity Zoom Events platform. Within Zoom Events, there is no option for breakout rooms and participants have cameras and microphones switched off. However, we use the chat and Q&A functions to make the sessions interactive. Webinars that engage the audience via questions to respond to using the chat function or through polls, etc. are very much appreciated by our audience. Participants are also encouraged to put questions for the presenter in the Q&A, so the presenter can try to answer them at the end of the webinar during a short discussion with the webinar host.

Feedback from our webinar participants suggests that their reason for attending is primarily to help them in their day-to-day teaching or teacher development work. Consequently, we ask all presenters to ensure that their sessions have some practical element that the audience can take away and apply to their own context, with classroom examples to illustrate theory in practice.

A few days after a webinar, we also invite our presenters to participate in an optional live Q&A session on Facebook or Instagram to answer audience questions on the same topic as the webinar.

We organise our programme according to themes – or professional practices – in the British Council's Continuous Professional Development framework. Your webinar proposal should be designed to fit into one of next year's themes:

• Managing resources
• Integrating learning technologies
• Taking responsibility for professional development
• Knowing the subject (demonstrating how language systems can be explored)
• Planning lessons and courses
• Understanding educational policies and practice (including safeguarding, educational policy in schools, regions and at national level, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, etc.)
• Gender
• Assessment
• Climate action for language education
• Inclusive practices
• Multilingualism
• Anti-racism or other types of discrimination

All applicants will be considered for global TeachingEnglish events as well as regional ones. We will be in touch to let you know if you have been successful by the end of March 2024.
