TeachingEnglish: How to teach reading

Boost your learners' reading skills by learning what effective readers do and develop these skills with engaging classroom activities. Enrolment is now closed, but if you're already enrolled, you can access and work on the course until 31 March 2025.

In the three modules, you will learn:

Module 1 Understanding reading

This module will help you recognise features of texts, explore some key concepts relating to reading and identify strategies for developing reading skills.

Module 2 Understanding teaching reading

The aim of this module is to consider why learners read, and how to identify their specific needs in relation to reading. You'll look at strategies that develop reading skills, as well as practical activities that use these strategies. The module also provides practice in planning an effective reading lesson.

Module 3 Engaging with reading skills

The aim of this module is to identify effective strategies that will help you develop reading skills in your learners. The module examines beliefs about reading and why learners read. It clarifies features of text and the most important concepts of reading.
