Abstract:

This report explores the current trends, practices, and challenges in online continuing professional development (OCPD) for English teachers in these six ASEAN countries. Commissioned by the British Council and carried out by TransformELT, the study outlines the evolving role of digital learning in supporting teachers' professional growth, and emphasises the increasing importance of online training for English teachers in these regions.

The report provides a detailed analysis of the digital environments in these countries, showing how internet access, technology, and local conditions affect the success of OCPD programmes. The findings suggest that English teachers in different countries have varied needs and there are varying stages of OCPD adoption across the region. The study emphasises the need for OCPD content to be practical and directly relevant for classroom use. Additionally, teachers prefer video-based learning and particularly benefit from peer support networks, which allow them to share experiences and learn from one another.

The report also points out the importance of creating OCPD programmes that meet the unique challenges of each country. For example, many rural areas face poor internet connection, making it harder for teachers to access online resources. It is important to design OCPD programmes which can offer strategies that help teachers improve their digital skills and help them to work independently. As education systems across the region continue to integrate online solutions after the Covid-19 pandemic, this research offers helpful insights for those involved in improving English teachers' professional development in Southeast Asia.

This report offers valuable guidance for policymakers, educators, and organisations looking to support the professional development of English teachers. It highlights how online professional development can improve teaching practices and drive innovation in education across the ASEAN region, helping to shape the future of English language teaching.
