Talking about what you're wearing

Use this lesson in face-to-face or online teaching to help students learn and practise clothes vocabulary.

Face-to-face classroom lesson

In this lesson children practise clothes vocabulary with flashcards and online games. They listen to and watch a story about a boy and his favourite clothes, and then join in with a song about clothes. They play an action game, then write about their favourite clothes for homework.

Learning outcomes

All learners will:

  • Practise and extend use of clothes vocabulary
  • Develop listening and speaking skills

Some learners will

  • Develop writing skills

Online classroom lesson

In this lesson learners talk about clothes and accessories. They initially meet vocabulary through a pre-lesson task, then they practise the vocabulary in the lesson with realia and guessing games. Next they use different forms of the present continuous to describe what people are wearing with speaking and writing activities. Finally, they expand their vocabulary and dress an online class teddy or hero in preparation for their homework to create their own teddy or hero.

  • Practise clothes and accessories vocabulary
  • Practise talking about what people are wearing (I'm wearing, you're wearing, he's wearing, she's wearing)
  • Consider contexts when clothes and accessories might be worn
  • Use creativity

Aged 5-8/ 9-12 (CEFR A1-A2)

60 minutes. This could be done over two lessons

T you will need some flashcards, worksheets and links from the LearnEnglish Kids website (see the materials section on the lesson plan for more details). For the online classroom lesson, you will also need a bag of clothes and accessories to use as realia.
